If I decide to purchase the FJ60 tomorrow how do I get it home? Can I just take a plate of my wife’s car for the day or do I have some time to go naked? Massachusetts
Unfortunately this is not the FJ I’ll be looking at

You look for frame rust and floor pan rot and pay $4,000 or under.

Also, you can get a trip permit from the DMV depending on your state. Which is not illegal.

In WI you have two business days to get plates on it if you’re driving it.
Which means you can buy a car Friday after 5pm, drive it until Tuesday, then park it and wait for plates. Or you can pay $5 for temp tags.

Borrowing a plate is a pretty common thing but it only works if you don’t get pulled over for something else.
MA doesn’t issue temp tags.
Go down to your DMV or Police Department and ask what they recommend.

Maybe you can get some sort of “permission slip” in the event that you get pulled over.

MA is terrible about this.
It is not legal to drive it without registration. You can swap tags and hope not to get caught. If that’s your plan, I would at least get it on insurance first, cops are usually grumpiest about driving without insurance.
What MA really wants you to do is have them drive it to your place, then they take the tags with them, and it sits until you register it. Stupid, but that’s MA.

I’ll hold onto your Jalop card until a decision is made.
Good luck tomorrow!

I work at a Mass dealership so I can lend some insight here. You can’t transfer the plate off of your wife’s car unless it is totaled or sold and you have proof of this. If that is the case, you can do so with the proper documentation indicating that in the glovebox. BUT, if you do the transfer the registration for the FJ must stay exactly the same as the registration of the car you are taking the plates from. So if the other car was in her name, this one will be too. If her car was not totaled or sold, and you just need a way to get the FJ home, you are SOL. You’ll need to get new plates for it first.

I am still an insured driver. What were to happen if I get pulled over with her plates or with no plates?

You’re an insured driver, or your cars are insured? Usually it’s the car that is insured, not the driver.

It’s a fairly serious violation. I’m not sure the exact fines, etc. but you’ll be in some shit. So as far as whether or not you want to do that, it’s your call. Before a cop pulls you over, typically they’ll run your plates on the computer to see if you had previously been pulled over, what for, etc. if you ever watch cops when they tail behind someone that is what they are doing. now when they do this, sometimes they choose to pull the person over, and sometimes they don’t. But, if this were to happen with your wife’s plates on the FJ, it would show that those plates are registered to a different car. At that point they’d definitely pull you over. As long as you drive safely home, it’s probably not a huge risk. But there is a potential you get into trouble. Definitely don't try going without plates at all. You'll be pulled over before making it home.

no idea about your state, but some allow you to drive 24 hours on a bill of sale or signed title

I believe in MA you can drive it for 7 days as long as you have the bill of sale with you. Don’t quote me though, it’s been a while since I was in the MA area.

Not a bad idea. As long as you guys drive the speed limit, you should be fine.
